Genesis Cinema

Restaurant | London | England | United Kingdom

"Genesis Cinema" in London, England, is much more than just a cinema – it is a versatile experience that also includes remarkable dining options. This independent cinema, deeply rooted in the East End of the city, combines the magic of film with a vibrant culinary scene that attracts both visitors before or after a screening and guests who simply want to eat and drink. As a family-run business, it has built a reputation since its founding in 1999 as a cultural meeting point that unites tradition and modernity. The dining offerings are an integral part of the overall concept, housed in a renovated 19th-century building.

The atmosphere at "Genesis Cinema" is unique, characterized by a charming mix of historic flair and contemporary design. The building itself, originally a music hall and later a cinema, has been lovingly restored, with features like exposed brick walls and high ceilings preserved. The restaurant area, which seamlessly integrates into the cinema environment, offers a relaxed, slightly hip vibe that perfectly matches the creative spirit of the East End. Particularly striking is the bar area "Bar Paragon," which, with its retro aesthetic – including vintage furniture and soft lighting – creates an inviting backdrop reminiscent of the 1950s. For those who wish to sit outside, there is a courtyard that offers urban coziness.

Culinary offerings at "Genesis Cinema" focus on straightforward yet tasteful cuisine, emphasizing fresh ingredients and British classics, often with a modern twist. A highlight is the "Margherita Pizza," featuring a crispy crust, rich tomato sauce, and creamy mozzarella – a favorite that showcases the artisanal quality of the kitchen. The "Pieminister Pies," hearty pastries served with fillings like beef and ale or chicken and mushrooms, are also popular, bringing the British pub tradition to life. For a quick snack, the "Frankfurter Hot Dog" option, enhanced with spicy toppings and homemade sauces, is ideal. The dishes are designed to be enjoyed both before a film screening and as standalone meals, highlighting the flexibility of the offering.

The beverage selection is equally impressive and a central part of the experience. "Bar Paragon" serves a wide range of cocktails, from classic recipes to creative originals – such as a "Spiced Rum Mule" with spiced rum and fresh ginger, perfectly matching the cinema's tropical vibes. Beer lovers can enjoy a selection of local craft beers, including "Nude Espresso," which also shines as a coffee option. For those seeking something special, there is a small but fine wine list that pairs excellently with the food. Particularly convenient: guests can take their drinks and snacks directly into the cinema halls, seamlessly merging enjoyment with the movie experience.

The history of "Genesis Cinema" is closely tied to the Tyrrell family, who took over the cinema and turned it into a cultural hub. It has weathered tough times, including the pandemic, by operating as a takeaway café while large chains closed their doors – a testament to the resilience and community spirit of the business. Today, it boasts five screens, including the luxurious "Studio 5" with sofas and armchairs, which is also used for private events. The dining offerings have developed alongside this, providing an alternative to the usual cinema snacks like popcorn, which is available here but takes a backseat to the variety of dishes.

The audience is diverse – from film enthusiasts to young creatives and families – reflecting the inclusive atmosphere. The staff is known for their friendliness and willingness to help, although it can get a bit hectic on busy evenings. "Genesis Cinema" is proud to be an LGBTQ+-friendly and family-friendly place that also offers vegan options and accessible access. It is a space that captures the essence of the East End: raw, creative, and warm.

Overall, "Genesis Cinema," with its dining options, is a place that combines tradition and innovation. It not only offers top-notch food and drinks but also an atmosphere that invites guests to linger – whether before a blockbuster, an independent film, or just to enjoy the vibe. For anyone seeking an authentic culinary experience with cultural value in London, this restaurant is a must-visit.

This is a great classic independent cinema. However, not allowing you to bring snacks in (with bag searches) and then selling stale-tasting popcorn at an extortionate price really sours the whole experience. I wouldn’t mind paying for snacks, in fact I’d be keen to, if they were of a decent quality and a reasonable price. It’s not asking for much really.

Booked tickets for Bridget jones 4 with a friend and last minute invited my SIXTEEN year old sister for a rated 15 movie which she is old enough to see, and they wouldn’t let her in without ID which is fair enough but they told us her oyster would be acceptable then after searching for it they decide to tell us it’s not acceptable and to use a passport or license. When we responded she hasn’t got either the rude staff decided to give her a dirty look and make a judgy comment “what you’ve never been abroad” the comment alone isn’t so rude but the smuggy judgy look and tone was blatantly unacceptable. Not like I tried taking her to see fifty shades of grey it was Bridget jones for crying out loud. For that my 16 year old sister had to travel back home in the dark alone because she didn’t want to ruin it for the rest of us which is a horrible feeling that staff made her have. Definitely won’t be coming here again

I'm not sure of all the other screens. But screen 2 smells of piss. The screen is probably the smallest in any cinema I've been too. Would not recommend

It is a romantic place to kick it here and relax. It is on Mike End Road of Stepney Green in the West. I used to do work experience there from September 2022 to July 2023 as an intern student from Tower Project. The staff was helpful and friendly to talk to during some quiet times. The food was lovely. I liked the movies which were awesome.

Lovely local cinema, easy access, no parking, they strict on not bringing outside food. The screens are small, only one big one. But all in all decent cinema, good for kids. Don't park in the retail park nearby as you will get an anpr ticket.

Food policy really disrespectful - unlike any other cinema will not allow sweets from home for those who cannot afford the high prices they charge.
